Known for its untamed natural beauty, dramatic mountain ranges and roaring waterfalls, the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island is a truly magical place. When planning the itinerary for your trip, you may be at a loss for where to start. There’s simply so much to see!
From the relaxing views to the magnificent glass-like glaciers, this local guide fills you in on the best of the West Coast!
Glacier Country
Franz Josef, located roughly 1.5 hours from Hokitika, is in the heart of the West Coast’s glacier country. While there are plenty of mind-blowing glaciers to explore, this region also offers other activities, such as hiking, soaking in hot tubs and visiting a local wildlife centre.
West Coast Treetops
You may have heard about the famous Hokitika Treetop Walk, as it is one of the best activities on the West Coast. The walkway is pram and wheelchair friendly and offers incredible views of the ancient rainforests.
If you are feeling adventurous, you could also try out the Tower Zipline, which spans 425 metres and reaches speeds of up to 60 kilometres an hour.
Punakaiki Pancake Rocks
Formed roughly 30 million years ago, the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks are a geographical wonder and a true sight to behold. The rock formations got their name because they look like stacks of pancakes.
There are also a few blowholes scattered between the formations, so be sure to visit at high tide so you can see them in action.
Hokitika Gorge
The stunning turquoise waters of Hokitika Gorge make this area a must-see attraction. The walk is relatively short and easy to do, making it a great activity for the entire family.
The glacial river is surrounded by native forests and promises to provide you with beautiful views no matter which way you look.
West Coast Treetops would love to welcome you for an unforgettable time as you explore ancient rainforests from a different perspective. We also have an onsite cafe that offers daily specials and incredible views.
