Photography Insights for Capturing the Beauty of the South Island

Tower Zipline in New Zealand

If you plan on visiting New Zealand’s South Island, make sure you don’t forget to bring your camera. The island is known for its crystal-clear waterways, ancient rainforests and unique geological structures – making for plenty of picture-perfect opportunities, such as a treetop walk in Hokitika, as you explore the incredible landscapes.

Below, we shed light on a few photography gems to help you capture the perfect shot.

Places to Visit

While there are dozens upon dozens of amazing, photogenic locations on the South Island, here are a few of the most picturesque places to include in your itinerary:

If you’re interested in street photography, you may be interested in visiting the cities of Christchurch and Queenstown. Towns like Hokitika also offer a great blend of quirky architecture and natural beauty.

The Best Time to Go

The summer months (December to February) are usually the best time to visit the South Island, as you’ll experience warm, dry weather and clear skies. This weather will allow you to spend more time outdoors and give you a better chance of capturing the perfect images.

However, if you want to experience the crisp beauty of the snowy mountains, you may be better off visiting in winter (June to August). Autumn (March to May) also provides a beautiful colour palette of reds, oranges and yellows.

Walk Quietly if You Want to Capture Wildlife

This should go without saying, but you should tread quietly if you hope to capture images of the South Island’s wildlife. The island is home to plenty of fascinating creatures, including over 300 bird species. Most animals are quite shy, so try to reduce your noise levels and keep a keen eye if you hope to encounter any.

Here at the West Coast Treetop Walk and Zipline, we are often frequented by photographers. Whether you’re a professional or a hobbyist, you’ll be blown away by the incredible views offered by our treetop walk in Hokitika

If you’re feeling brave, you could also try out our tandem zipline! Feel free to contact us to book your experience.
